GCR TAKING PART IN A THREE (3) DAYS NATIONAL PSEA NETWORK WORKSHOP AT UN WOMEN COMPOUND, YAOUNDE-CAMEROON [27-29,APRIL 2026]

1. Introduction
This report provides a comprehensive summary of the three-day workshop on Prevention of Sexual Exploitation and Abuse (PSEA) and Gender-Based Violence (GBV) which took place at the UN Women compound in Yaounde-Cameroon. The workshop aimed to strengthen participants’ knowledge, skills, and coordination mechanisms in addressing sexual exploitation, abuse, and gender-based violence within humanitarian and development contexts. This workshop brought a total of 35 participants drawn from the North, Far North, East, Centre, North West, Adamawa, and South West Regions of Cameroon.
2. Objectives of the Workshop
The workshop aimed to enhance understanding of PSEA and GBV concepts, promote survivor-centered approaches, strengthen referral pathways, and improve coordination among stakeholders.
#Day 1 focused on the Prevention of Sexual Exploitation and Abuse (PSEA). Participants were introduced to key concepts, including definitions, principles, and the importance of safeguarding vulnerable populations such as women, children, refugees, and internally displaced persons. Discussions highlighted the importance of confidentiality, informed consent, and victim-centered approaches. Participants explored challenges in reporting PSEA cases, including fear, stigma, cultural barriers, and power dynamics. The role of organizations and partners was emphasized, particularly the need for policies, training, and accountability mechanisms. The session also addressed victim support services, including medical, psychosocial, legal, and protection services, as well as coordination and advocacy efforts.

Day 2 focused on Gender-Based Violence (GBV), including definitions, forms, and underlying causes such as gender inequality and harmful social norms. Participants examined various types of GBV, including physical, sexual, emotional, and economic violence.The session emphasized the survivor-centered approach, highlighting principles such as safety, confidentiality, respect, and non-discrimination. Participants engaged in discussions and role plays to better understand how to respond appropriately to survivors.
5. Summary of Day 3 Activities
Day 3 was devoted to building participants’ skills as trainers. They learned adult learning principles, including how to engage diverse audiences, adapt content for local needs, and facilitate participatory learning. They also practiced designing localized training sessions and coordinating with different humanitarian actors.
6. Case Scenarios and Participant Questions
Throughout the training, several real-life scenarios were shared. For example, a participant recounted a case of a survivor hesitant to report due to fear of retaliation. Others asked how to handle disclosures from minors and whether legal steps could be taken without parental consent. These concerns were addressed by emphasizing the need for safe reporting, careful documentation, and adherence to national child protection laws.
7. Key Outcomes
By the end of the three days, participants left with improved knowledge of GBV and PSEA, stronger facilitation skills, and practical tools to cascade training in their workplaces. They also committed to building stronger referral networks and ensuring survivor-centered care.
8. Challenges Identified
Several challenges were noted: gaps in regional coordination, a lack of updated service mapping, and communication barriers. Some participants also mentioned that organizational hierarchy sometimes discourages reporting.
9. Recommendations
Key recommendations included: updating service directories, enhancing coordination between humanitarian actors, and tailoring communication to local languages. Participants also suggested regular follow-up sessions to monitor progress and address emerging issues.
10. Conclusion
In conclusion, the three-day ToT equipped participants with critical skills and knowledge to be effective trainers in PSEA and GBV response. Their next step will be to cascadethese learnings, ensuring the broader humanitarian community in Cameroon benefits from these strengthened capacities.
